Slaves wives and brides: Women under the rule of ISIS

Which is the role of women in a radical Muslim group like ISIS? Did women fight and kill, in the state ISIS ran in Iraq and Syria? What happened to the women that ISIS kidnapped? How was life in general for women in the group’s caliphate? Do you want to understand better what is the relation between radical Islam and women? How it is possible, that women were joining ISIS by the thousands from abroad? That active western women agreed to a life at home, just as wives and mothers? Then you need to read this book by acclaimed Dutch author and journalist Judit Neurink, who lived in Iraq for over ten years and reported on the arrival and departure of the ISIS regime for media in Holland and Belgium. Slaves wives and brides shows the complex relationship between women and radical Islam. In the book, Neurink gives a voice to Yazidi women who escaped from the caliphate. She tells the story of the American add worker Kayla Mueller, who was the slave of ISIS-leader Al-Baghdadi. She paints a clear picture of daily life under ISIS rule for women in cities like Mosul and Raqqa. With ISIS mostly defeated in Iraq and Syria, this book is a completely updated and edited version of Neurink’s sixth book The Women of the Caliphate.

Talks to Writers

Excerpt from Talks to Writers These chapters are reprinted from Lafcadio Hearn's "Interpretations of Literature," 1915 and from his "Life and Literature," 1917 - collections of the lectures he gave at the University of Tokyo between 1896 and 1902. Since the appearance of these lectures there has been a demand for separate groups of them in a form more available to the student. The present volume, therefore, brings together Hearn's remarks on the art of writing, in the hope that such an anthology of his principles and opinions may aid those who aspire in the literary craft. For the benefit of the reader who may make the acquaintance of Hearn's lectures for the first time in this volume, it should be said that he lectured very slowly, choosing simple words and constructions, in order that the foreign language might be as easy as possible for his Japanese students; and some of his students managed to take down many of his lectures word for word. From their notes - the only record we have of Lafcadio Hearn the teacher - these chapters are selected. No attempt has been made at what might be called a reconstruction of the text. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Coming Good Society

Two authors with decades of experience promoting human rights argue that, as the world changes around us, rights hardly imaginable today will come into being. A rights revolution is under way. Today the range of nonhuman entities thought to deserve rights is exploding-not just animals but ecosystems and even robots. Changes in norms and circumstances require the expansion of rights: What new rights, for example, are needed if we understand gender to be nonbinary? Does living in a corrupt state violate our rights? And emerging technologies demand that we think about old rights in new ways: When biotechnology is used to change genetic code, whose rights might be violated? What rights, if any, protect our privacy from the intrusions of sophisticated surveillance techniques?Drawing on their vast experience as human rights advocates, William Schulz and Sushma Raman challenge us to think hard about how rights evolve with changing circumstances, and what rights will look like ten, twenty, or fifty years from now. Against those who hold that rights are static and immutable, Schulz and Raman argue that rights must adapt to new realities or risk being consigned to irrelevance. To preserve and promote the good society-one that protects its members' dignity and fosters an environment in which people will want to live-we must at times rethink the meanings of familiar rights and consider the introduction of entirely new rights. Now is one of those times. The Coming Good Society details the many frontiers of rights today and the debates surrounding them. Schulz and Raman equip us with the tools to engage the present and future of rights so that we understand their importance and know where we stand.

The Golden Bough : A Study in Magic and Religion

A classic study of the beliefs and institutions of mankind, and the progress through magic and religion to scientific thought, The Golden Bough has a unique status in modern anthropology and literature. First published in 1890, The Golden Bough was eventually issued in a twelve-volume edition (1906-15) which was abridged in 1922 by the author and his wife. That abridgement has never been reconsidered for a modern audience. In it some of the more controversial passages were dropped, including Frazer's daring speculations on the Crucifixion of Christ. For the first time this one-volume edition restores Frazer's bolder theories and sets them within the framework of a valuableintroduction and notes. A seminal work of modern anthropolgy, The Golden Bough also influenced many twentieth-century writers, including D H Lawrence, T S Eliot, and Wyndham Lewis. Its discussion of magical types, the sacrificial killing of kings, the dying god, and the scapegoat is given fresh pertinence in this new edition. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Holy Qur'an

The Holy Qur'an (also known as The Koran) is the sacred book of Islam. It is the word of God whose truth was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad through the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. As it was revealed, so it was committed to memory by his companions, though written copies were also made by literate believers during the lifetime of the Prophet. The first full compilation was by Abu Bakar, the first Caliph, and it was then recompiled in the original dialect by the third Caliph Uthman, after the best reciters had fallen in battle. Muslims believe that the truths of The Holy Qur'an are fully and authentically revealed only in the original classical Arabic. However, as the influence of Islam grows and spreads to the modern world, it is recognised that translation is an important element in introducing and explaining Islam to a wider audience. This translation, by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, is considered to be the most faithful rendering available in English.
