Ancient/ Modern Athens Cultural Maps

Ancient Athens: The map of Ancient Athens covers roughly the area of the Classical city, bounded by the Themistoclean wall built after the Persian wars. The plan of the Classical walls (and their Valerian and Late Roman successors) was drawn by archaeologist Annita Theocharaki. Topographer Dimitris Theodosopoulos retraced the ancient course of the Ilissos and Eridanos rivers now mostly hidden under asphalt. The main monuments of the ancient and Byzantine period are marked against the background topography and modern road network. For key monuments, a three-dimensional representation was created by Delia Potamianou. With this map we invite you to wander in the steps of the politicians, historians, philosophers and artists who bequeathed to us democracy, philosophy, the theater and some of the finest works of art and architecture that ever saw the light. Modern Athens: The Map of Modern Athens is a thematic map showing buildings important for the architectural physiognomy of the city. Buildings are marked separately by period, from late Ottoman, to Neoclassical and Modern. The most notable ones are highlighted with three-dimensional representations created by Delia Potamianou and a short text on the back with historical details. This map invites us to see Athens through buildings that shape the present-day identity of the city, and through these buildings to take a stroll back in time to see the city's progress from modest neoclassical capital to modern metropolis.

Andy Goldsworthy: Ephemeral Works: 2004-2014

For forty years, Andy Goldsworthy has worked with an extraordinary range of natural materials, often at their source. On an almost daily basis, he makes works of art using the materials and conditions that he encounters wherever he is, be it the land around his Scottish home, the mountain regions of France or Spain, or the pavements of New York City, Glasgow, or Rio de Janeiro. Out of earth, rocks, leaves, ice, snow, rain, sunlight and shadow he makes artworks that exist briefly before they are altered and erased by natural processes. They are documented in his photographs, and their larger meanings are bound up with the conditions, forces and processes that they embody: materiality, temporality, growth, vitality, permanence, decay, chance, labour and memory. Ephemeral Works features approximately two hundred of these works, selected by Goldsworthy from thousands he has made between 2001 and the present, and arranged in chronological sequence, capturing his creative process as it interacts with material, place, and the passage of time and seasons.

Animal Liberation Now

Animal Liberation started a worldwide movement when it revealed the abuse of animals in factory farms and laboratories. It demonstrated that these and other practices were the cause of appalling and unnecessary suffering and therefore morally indefensible. In the fifty years since, science has further vindicated Peter Singer's arguments about animal sentience, vegetarianism has become widespread, and the book has helped change the minds of millions. But the situation for animals has in many ways grown worse. Despite improvements in animal welfare in some regions - brought about in large part by this book - in many others the scale of their abuse has reached staggering new depths. This revised edition, of which about two-thirds is entirely new, documents these and other developments, such as the impact of meat consumption on climate and the spread of dangerous new viruses. It refines its arguments in light of new evidence, equips the reader with fresh tools and advice, and shows us all the road ahead. The result, Animal Liberation Now, is a book of galvanising power, relevance and importance.

Anonymous paths: A personal view of Greece, 2007-2017

The decade of 2010, during which most of the photos in this publication were taken, was an era of transition in Greece. On the face of it, at least, nothing remained unchanged for long and a new kind of daily life started to emerge. All of this seemed to point to the end of an era. The images of the album "Anonymous Paths" do not illustrate the crisis but rather they walk the line between a "before", an uncertain "now" and an even more uncertain "after".

Antigone

Antigone, defying her uncle Creon's decree that her brother should remain unburied, challenges the morality of man's law overruling the laws of the gods. The clash between her and Creon with its tragic consequences have inspired continual reinterpretation. This translation by Don Taylor, accurate yet poetic, was made for a BBC TV production of the Theban Plays in 1986, which he directed.

Aphorisms (bilingual edition)

Apology of Socrates

The "Apology of Socrates", written by Plato, is the speech of self-defense which Socrates spoke at his trial in 399 BC. Specifically, the "Apology" is a defense against the charges of "corrupting the youth" and "not believing in the gods in whom the city believes, but in other daimonia". In this dialogue, Socratew speaks in a very plain manner and explains who he is and what kind of life he led. The "Apology" is one of four Socratic dialogues, along with "Euthyphro", "Phaedo" and "Crito", through which Plato details the final days of the philosopher Socrates.

Argonauts of the Western Pacific

Bronislaw Malinowski's pathbreaking Argonauts of the Western Pacific is at once a detailed account of exchange in the Melanesian islands and a manifesto of a modernist anthropology. Malinowski argued that the goal of which the ethnographer should never lose sight is 'to grasp the native's point of view, his relation to life, to realise his vision of his world.' Through vivid evocations of Kula life, including the building and launching of canoes, fishing expeditions and the role of myth and magic amongst the Kula people, Malinowski brilliantly describes an inter-island system of exchange - from gifts from father to son to swapping fish for yams - around which an entire community revolves. A classic of anthropology that did much to establish the primacy of painstaking fieldwork over the earlier anecdotal reports of travel writers, journalists and missionaries, it is a compelling insight into a world now largely lost from view. With a new foreword by Adam Kuper.
