Gastronomicon - Culinary Art in Ancient Greece

I declare for myself there is nothing delightful          5

than when joy possesses a whole people,

and banqueters in the halls listen to a minstrel

tables in front of them laden with meat and bread,

while the stewrd pours wine from the bowl              10

and carries it round and fills the cups.

This seems to my mind the fairest thing of all to me.

Gifts of the Gods: A History of Food in Greece (Food and Nations)

What do we think about when we think of Greek food? For many, it is the meze and traditional plates of a typical Greek island taverna from summer holidays or from Greek restaurants at home. This book takes us into and beyond the taverna to offer us a unique, comprehensive history of the foods of Greece. Andrew and Rachel Dalby discuss how the land was first settled, what was grown, and how certain fruits, herbs and vegetables came to be identified. Moving through prehistorical and classical Greece, and the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, they explore the variety of Greek foods among communities outside the national borders as well as the food culture of the regions and islands of Greece itself. Through a synthesis of modern Greek food, with all that it owes to Christianity and to Greeks of the diaspora, they lead us into a discussion of Greek hospitality. Greek food is brimming with thousands of centuries of history, lore and culture. With many superb illustrations, and traditional recipes that blend historical and modern flavours, Gifts of the Gods is a fine account of this rich and ancient cuisine.

Goddess with a Thousand Faces : A one-of-a-kind exploration of goddesses from our ancient past

This is a historical journey like no other - unlike every other book on the subject, Goddess with a Thousand Faces transcends geographical boundaries and breaks down cultural barriers. From Rangda in Bali, to Freyja in Iceland and more recognisable faces such as the Greek goddess Artemis, it is a work of true inclusion - readers are invited to consider these dazzling goddesses as part of a cultural cannon of human femininity; regardless of race, sex, or gender.

Goddess with a Thousand Faces asks us to interrogate our past through a fresh new lens.

We're challenged to comprehend our relationship with the feminine within us, question the legacy of goddesses, and whether we might see them in the faces of us all.

Greece - Pictorial, Descriptive and Historical

Pictorial, Descriptive and Historical The Emperor Hadrian possessed a magnificent villa at Tivoli, of which the ruins still remain. In it he endeavoured to perpetuate his own Recollections of Greece. He there erected buildings to which he gave the names of Poecile and Lyceum; by their side he planted the Grove of an Academy, and he carried the stream of an ideal Peneus through the pleasant Vale of an imitative Tempe. The Traveller in Greece constructs in his own mind such a villa at this. He furnishes it with the beautiful scenes, which he once visited in that country; he refreshes it with the clear waters and cool shades of a Tempe; he decorates it with the fair porticos of a Poecile, a Luceum, and an Academy. But his recollections of Greece, like the buildings of Hadrian, are liable to fall into decay; the Author of the following pages has, therefore, attempted to give a permanence to his own remini- scences by constructing a humbler Tivoli, in which he hopes that others may perhaps enjoy some share of that pleasure, which was felt of old by the Greek Traveller in the Villa of Hadrian.

Greece through the Lens of Takis Tloupas

Photography as a technique is in essence a process of faithfully depicting the objective world. With the aid of technology, however, and especially through the sensitisation and more profound activation of visual perception, it was rapidly transformed into a creative art. This book presents a superb sample of the work of the unique photographer of Larissa, who served photography as a creative art, on the basis of his personal aesthetic and his profound belief in the importance of research. The present book is therefore much more than an album of fine photographs. It attempts to demonstrate how he viewed nature and men through his photographic lens, in order to provide us with the truths of a world that the rest of us have not learned to see.

Greece, the Decade of War : Occupation, Resistance and Civil War

In this book, acclaimed historian David Brewer investigates explores 1940s Greece -- one of the most tumultuous decades in Greece's modern history. Beginning in 1941, the occupation of Greece by Germany was intensely brutal: children starved on the streets of Athens; the Jewish population was decimated in the Holocaust; heroic acts of resistance were met with vicious reprisals. When Greece was finally freed from Nazi rule in 1944, the fractured and embittered nation became engulfed in civil war, as conflict flared between the British and American-sponsored government and communist-led rebels. In Greece, The Decade of War, Brewer expertly analyses these events and in doing so provides a compelling military and political history.
