Gail Holst

Les touristes qui visitent la Grèce ne connaissent guère le rébétiko, musique urbaine importée de Turquie dans les années 1920, qu'on qualifie parfois de "blues grec", et qui se survit aujourd'hui dans quelques bonnes tavernes, après avoir influencé les compositeurs Hadjidakis et Théodorakis, et des chanteurs comme Nikos Papazoglou, Haris Alexiou, Maryo ou Dalaras. Gail Holst, Australienne de naissance, mais Grecque de coeur, a parcouru les bas quartiers et les campagnes de Grèce dans les années 1970, rencontrant chanteurs et amateurs de rébétiko. Elle en a tiré ce livre, abondamment illustré de photos et traduit en plusieurs langues. Son travail musicologique lui a valu la reconnaissance de plusieurs musiciens dont Mikis Theodorakis, qu'elle a d'ailleurs accompagné au clavecin à une époque. Elle enseigne aujourd'hui à l'université Cornell aux Etats-Unis, mais ne dédaigne pas de pousser la chansonnette rébétique quand l'occasion se présente. Cette réédition reprend celle de 2010, mais y ajoute un avant-propos inédit de Michel Volkovitch. Le choix des chansons qui accompagnent le livre privilégie les enregistrements originaux de la grande époque du rébétiko.

NISIOTIKA is a book about the living tradition of Greek island music. Nisiotika derives from the Greek word for island, nisi, and has come to describe in particular the music and songs that are played and sung at festivals and celebrations on the islands of the Aegean. It is music to be danced to, and, as revealed in this book, in traditional celebrations with live music it is the dancers who call the tune.
The songs tell of the sea and people whose lives are bound up with often dangerous sea trades, of love and of pretty girls, sometimes of historical events, but also of sadness and separation, of women who wait in fear for their husbands and sons to return from long voyages or faraway lands. Most of the songs are not very old and date from probably no earlier than the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, although they borrow musical and poetic motifs from older forms of Greek folk song. Like the rembetika, the songs of the underground and of urban Greece, the nisiotika only became pan-Hellenic music after the islanders emigrated, initially to the US and then later to Athens. It was then that their songs were recorded and a wider audience for their music was created.
Building on the work of pioneering musicologists and through independent research into the songs themselves, recordings and interviews, Gail Holst-Warhaft has turned the same discerning and loving eye on the nisiotika as she did in her now classic book on the rembetika, Road to Rembetika.

The rembetika, songs that were sung in the poor quarters of Smryna, Istanbul and the ports of Greece in the late nineteenth century, and became the popular bouzouki music of the 1930s to 1950s, have many parallels with American blues. Like the blues, the rembeika were the music of outsiders, who developed their own slang and their own forms of expression. Road to Rembetika was the first book in English to attempt a general survey of the world of the rembetes who smoked hashish and danced the passionate, introspective zembekiko to release their emotions. An enthusiastic introduction to the subject, it was written by an Australian musician and writer who first came to Greece in 1965 and who has continued to perform and write about Greek music ever since. Gail Holst describes her own initiation into the rembetika, outlines its historical and sociological background, its musical characteristics and instrumentation. The second part of the book is a collection of rembetika songs in Greek with an English translation en face. The text is illustrated with photographs of the period, musical examples and some original manuscripts of the songs. This fourth edition has been retypeset and amended, and has a new introduction and further song lyrics, and the bibliography and discography have been updated.

Ο αποστασιοποιημένος παρατηρητής προσεγγίζει πιο ψύχραιμα ένα θέμα, μια και η λογική υπερέχει του συναισθήματος. Όταν δε το θέμα αυτό εμπίπτει στο γνωστικό του πεδίο, τότε η προσέγγιση απολαμβάνει τη δυναμική, την αξία και την αρωγή της επιστημοσύνης. Με εφόδιο τις δυο αυτές συνιστώσες, αποστασιοποίηση και επιστημοσύνη, αποπειράθηκε η Gail Holst να αποτιμήσει, προς τα τέλη της δεκαετίας 1970-1980, τη ζωή και το έργο του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη. Από τις επισταμένες έρευνες και καταγραφές της προέκυψε αγγλόφωνη έκδοση με τίτλο Theodorakis, Myths & Politics in Modern Greek Music, η οποία σύντομα, το 1980, κυκλοφόρησε, μεταφρασμένη στα ελληνικά, με τίτλο Μίκης Θεοδωράκης: Μύθος και πολιτική στη σύγχρονη ελληνική μουσική. Στη δυσεύρετη σήμερα μονογραφία της η συγγραφέας εστιάζει στον Μίκη Θεοδωράκη και ως ενεργό πολίτη και ως μουσικό δημιουργό. Ως μουσικό δημιουργό, κυρίως, μια και ως τέτοιον τον γνώρισε το 1972 στην πατρίδα της, την Αυστραλία, η Holst, όντας μουσικός και μουσικολόγος η ίδια. Ο απέραντος, πολύτροπα ομολογημένος, θαυμασμός της προς το ζωντανό και αδιαπραγμάτευτο μνημείο του σύγχρονου ελληνικού πολιτισμού, που ονομάζεται Μίκης Θεοδωράκης, δεν την εμπόδισε να στοιχειοθετήσει ένα ρεαλιστικό μουσικό και πολιτικό πορτρέτο, το οποίο, εκτός από τις εμπεριστατωμένες παρατηρήσεις και αναφορές έχει ένα ακόμη μεγάλο χάρισμα: αποφεύγει την αγιοποίηση. Όχι μόνο την αποφεύγει, αλλά συχνά καταγράφει τις αντιρρήσεις και τις διχογνωμίες της. Έχοντας αποκτήσει μιαν ιδιαίτερη σχέση μαζί του – εκτός των άλλων συνεργάστηκε, ως μουσικός, με την ορχήστρα του σε περιοδεία στην Πελοπόννησο και την Κεντρική Ελλάδα, το 1975 – αποδεικνύεται στο μελέτημά της αυτό απόμακρος ουδέτερος παρατηρητής, ανεπηρέαστος από την προσωπική επικοινωνία και την αλληλοεκτίμηση. Ένα ιστορικό ζωής και τέχνης, είναι εν κατακλείδι, το πόνημα της Χολστ για τον Θεοδωράκη, το οποίο είναι συνταγμένο με απροκάλυπτη εκτίμηση, αλλά και βαθιά, πολυεπίπεδη γνώση, η οποία προσφέρει το δικαίωμα σε δόκιμες προεκτάσεις-αναφορές. Η έλλειψη της καθόλα σημαντικής αυτής έκδοσης, γέννησε την ανάγκη της επανέκδοσης. Και ιδού πραγματοποιήθηκε αυτή χάρη στην ανιδιοτελή αφοσίωση στην Ελληνική Μουσική του Θανάση Συλιβού, που φρόντισε όχι απλώς για την επανέκδοσή του, αλλά για μια νέα έκδοση, αφού είναι συμπληρωμένη με φωτογραφική τεκμηρίωση, ένα νέο επίλογο και ένα νέο σημαντικό κεφάλαιο, που αναφέρεται στην τριλογία των λυρικών έργων του Μίκη Θεοδωράκη (Μήδεια-Ηλέκτρα-Αντιγόνη), συσχετίζοντάς τα με τις σύγχρονες ελληνικές τραγωδίες – παρόμοιο θέμα ανέπτυξε, με διαφορετικό, όμως, τρόπο η συγγραφέας στην ομιλία της στο Διεθνές Συνέδριο που πραγματοποιήθηκε στα Χανιά τον Ιούλιο του 2005, για να γιορταστούν τα ογδοντάχρονα του Μίκη. Το βιβλίο εμπλουτίζει τις γνώσεις όχι μόνο για τον Μίκη, αλλά και για ολόκληρο τον Ελληνισμό, από την αρχαιότητα μέχρι σήμερα. Γιατί ο Μίκης αν και από χρόνια οικουμενικός, είναι πρωτίστως Έλληνας.
