Patrick Modiano

Το τηλέφωνο χτυπά επίμονα στο σπίτι του ηλικιωμένου συγγραφέα Ζαν Νταραγκάν. Ένας άγνωστος θέλει να του επιστρέψει τη χαμένη του ατζέντα. Η μνήμη θα τον γυρίσει στην επαύριο της Κατοχής με τη σκοτεινή ατμόσφαιρα, όπου ο επτάχρονος τότε Ζαν Νταραγκάν, παρατημένος από τη μητέρα του, ζει χάρη στις φροντίδες ενός κύκλου μικροκακοποιών, τζογαδόρων και κοριτσιών των παριζιάνικων καμπαρέ, κυρίως όμως της εικοσιδυάχρονης Αννί Αστράν, κοριτσιού των περιθωριακών νυχτερινών κέντρων, που θα στοιχειώσει τη ζωή του με ένα ατελείωτο παιχνίδι απωθήσεων το οποίο αρχίζει τα πρώτα χρόνια της δεκαετίας του 1950 και τελειώνει το καλοκαίρι του 2013. Η σκηνογραφία φιλμ νουάρ και το Παρίσι δεν λείπουν κι απ’ αυτό το βιβλίο του Πατρίκ Μοντιανό, όπως επίσης το βασανιστικό αίσθημα μιας ασυνείδητης ενοχής που κολλάει σαν μεταδοτική αρρώστια πάνω στο παιδί που μεγάλωσε στις παρυφές της Ιστορίας και νανουρίστηκε από μισόλογα δωσίλογων, παριζιάνων φτωχοδιάβολων και μαφιόζων με τρυφερή καρδιά. Τα στοιχεία, οι χρονολογίες, τα τοπωνύμια, τα ονόματα των δρόμων που παρατίθενται, δεν αρκούν για να αναδυθεί ολοκληρωμένο το παρελθόν, και η βιωμένη πραγματικότητα παραμένει αβέβαιη, μυστηριώδης, κάποτε απειλητική. Όμως ο Μοντιανό το είχε πει προκαταβολικά: "Δεν μπορώ να δώσω την πραγματικότητα των γεγονότων, μπορώ να παρουσιάσω μόνο τη σκιά τους".

Ο συγγραφέας της απουσίας υπογράφει ίσως, με το "Ένα πεντιγκρί", το καλύτερο βιβλίο του: την αφήγηση των πρώτων είκοσι χρόνων της ζωής του στο μεταπολεμικό Παρίσι· ένα ταξίδι στη νεανική του ηλικία, κλειδί για το σύνολο του έργου του. Les Inrockuptibles Αυτή η άρνηση της ενδοσκόπησης, του πάθους, του υπερχειλίζοντος συναισθηματισμού, καθιστά το βιβλίο παράδοξο και δυνατό. Είναι βέβαια γραμμένο με συγκίνηση, και η αίσθηση του τραγικού δεν είναι ποτέ απούσα στην αποστασιοποιημένη γραφή του Μοντιανό. Ωστόσο, με αμείλικτο τρόπο, ο συγγραφέας επισημαίνει, σε όσους νομίζουν ότι η λογοτεχνία συνίσταται στην αναπαραγωγή της θλίψης για τη χαμένη ζωή τους, ότι, έτσι, αναμασούν απλώς τις θρηνωδίες και τις κοινοτοπίες τους. Για τον Μοντιανό, η λογοτεχνία είναι ο πιο ριζοσπαστικός τρόπος για να αντισταθεί κανείς στην κοινωνική καταστροφή.
